First Lady and Senator

In 1999, Hillary decided to run for U.S. Senate following Senator Moynihan (D – NY)’s retirement announcement. She bought a home north of NYC and became the first First Lady to be a candidate for elected office. Hillary was sworn in as Senator of New York on January 1, 2001 and spent 20 days as both the First Lady and a senator until Bill left the White House on January 20.
